This exhibition showcases the role of the Whangarei Art Museum and the creative spirit of Whangarei city and once again gives the public an opportunity to view important talismans, taonga and treasures from the cities

Included in this exhibition are key works from the Heritage and Contemporary collections, gifts, bequests and new acquisitions showcasing established Northland and New Zealand artists, a small exhibition exploring the influence of the Art Deco movement in early twentieth century New Zealand art and a display highlighting important public art works initiated and commissioned by W.A.M.

Representation & Reaction in association with The Kelliher Trust, The Fletcher Trust and ABN AMRO Craigs, re-acquaints the public with the paintings and aesthetic objectives of the artists associated with The Kelliher Art Award, and the modernist contemporaries who stood in diametrical opposition to them. This exhibition brings the two opposed traditions together in direct juxtapositions so that the distinctive qualities of both can be re-evaluated. It includes works drawn mainly from the collections of two trusts, the Kelliher and the Fletcher, each one devoted to a single aspect of the debate.

It also addresses the larger issues surrounding the polarisation occurring in New Zealand art at the time through the following six themed groupings: The Year 1960, The Year 1963, People in Action, Maori Modernism, Modernist Treatments and Revisiting the Kelliher (work by other artists who have re-thought The Kelliher Art Award and its impact).
