The principle of duality has always been at the centre of Stezaker's work, both physically and metaphorically. In his latest series of collages, "Double Shadow," the artist uses processes of division and duplication to reflect on the uncanny nature of duplicative figures, such as the doppelgänger, Janus, and the hermaphrodite.

By juxtaposing silhouette-like contours, archetypal images taken from trivial sources are given new life. The sharply defined profiles of masculinity and femininity, so characteristic of Hollywood imagery of the 1950s, dissolve into peculiar, sometimes monstrous hybrids. Unsettling juxtapositions arise at the overlap of shadow areas that seem to open up between worlds.

According to Stezaker, he was inspired by the use of silhouettes in Fin de Siècle fairy tale illustrations as well as early expressionist films to rediscover "the joy of drawing" in these works, as well as "the power of the contour to demarcate a boundary between presence and absence, as well as the imaginary and the real."
