Bernhard Leitner has been working since 1968 on the creation of sound spaces, meaning he defines sound as architectural-sculptural material. He initially designed the model of the Soundcube, a cube lined on the six interior walls with a grid of 384 speakers. By controlling individual speakers distributed in the space, rooms are shaped through the movement of sounds.
After a series of empirical studies, the artist created around 150 sound-space sculptures between the mid-1970s and today, each uniquely measuring the relationship between body perception and sound spaces developing in time and space. Each sculpture can be experienced as an interior space (walking, sitting, lying) and opens up new psycho-physiological dimensions of experience.
This volume brings together, for the first time, all of the artist's sound-space studies, sound-space sculptures, and sound-space installations.
